World Traveler

I'm trying to land the experience of a lifetime: traveling the world for free, compliments of STA Travel.  I'd spend a few months traveling, writing, and taking pictures... which is what I've been doing anyway, as we all know!  It's a video application process, and I'm up against at least 250 other people for two slots... but I really think I have a chance. This video showcases some of my adventures over the last year.  Dublin to Singapore, seven countries, and 800 miles by bicycle later...

Day 19: Koh Tao (or, Journey's End)

The rain is in some way appropriate for today, the last day of the journey. Yesterday I kissed goodbye to S at the pier--he should be through Bangkok now, en route to Pattaya, if all went as planned. He begins his Instructor Development Course in three days.

And I've been debating with myself how long I can hang on before getting back to my responsibilities in the real world. The more I think about it, though, the less desire I have to go back.

Day 16: Koh Phangan (or, Trails Are For Sissies)

I let out an involuntary squeak of surprise as my bottom touches the seat in the dark and I feel the wetness there. It's rained in the night and the dirt road ahead will be full of puddles. I switch on my headlamp. It's 3:07 a.m. and i'm dressed with a sarong over the bikini I bought in Phuket--the only bits of reasonably clean clothing I had, hence the only pieces not given to the gueshouse for cleaning. And my Chaco sandals.

Day 12: Koh Phi Phi

It's off season on Koh Phi Phi. Which is good. Perhaps because of this, despite what the Lonely Planet had led me to believe, we're able to find affordable accommodation in a bamboo bungalow up on a hillside. But even so, it's difficult to navigate our bicycles through the throngs of people on the paths around the "Tourist Village". It's hard to imagine how crowded this place must be in peak season.

But now, it's nice. Busy and bustly enough to feel like a holiday and to gather a sizeable crowd to pack the dance space for the late-night beach parties.

Day 7: Ao Phang-Nga Islands (or, Romance)

"Are you always this generous with your traveling companions?" I asked S. We were sitting on the roof we had climbed onto from the second floor of our guesthouse on Koh Panyi, the Muslim fishing village island included as the first stop in our package boat tour of the islands aroud Phang-Nga. The sun was going down, but we were on the wrong side of the island to see the show. So I'd suggested we climb onto the adjacent roof. S had been a little skeptical, but after I did it without incident he didn't hesitate.

"Yeah," he said. "When I'm happy. I mean, I'm happy for you.

Day 3: Khao Sok (or, Sick)

It's 6:15 a.m. when I knock on S's door. It's the second time that morning. We're at a small hotel in the middle of nowhere, more or less. We're outside the little village of Ban Ta Khun, 55 kilometeres from Khao Sok National Park and at least as many from Surat Thani, where we came from yesterday.

We had stopped in the village the evening before, having been drawn in by a festival at a temple next to the road.

"Let's check it out," I'd suggested, on seeing the people and the dancers as we rode past. "Just for a little while."

"Okay. Ten minutes?" S had agreed.

Day 1: Chumphon to Lang Suan

We agreed to meet at the Farang Bar at 8 a.m., but I slept in until nearly 7:00 and I still had to pack, eat breakfast, and wash the dishes. It seemed like little enough at the time, but I had to push our meeting back to 9:00.

My motorbike is reluctant to start after the long period of disuse since I traded it for my bicycle in daily service. But eventually I get it going, and I meet S at the Farang Bar about 9:15. He's just sitting down to breakfast, so I join him, and the Finnish guy we met last night who is his current company.

Next on the agenda is some
